The Rover company started making sewing machines in the 1860's and produced their first motor vehicle (The Rover safety cycle) in 1884. Their first car (Made in 1888) was the Rover Electric Carriage but it was never put into production.

The Land rover project was official in 1947 when Maurice Wilks' Willy's Jeep needed replacing on his farm. He wanted a vehicle that could match the Jeeps off road capabilities and durabillity.

The First Land rover

The first Land rover was developed in 1947 and was put into production in 1948. It was built to rival the American Willys Jeep used in World War Two. It had a central steering wheel and the front looked similar to the Jeep.
First Appearence

In April 1948 The Land rover appears at Amsterdam Motor Show and was very popular. Two prototype 80-inch wheelbase Land rovers were exhibited at the Motor Show. The new vehicle was greeted with enthusiasm and was eaten up by the motoring press.
